AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Answer Engine Optimization is structuring content so an AI can lift a direct answer out of it and cite you. Not ranking. Being quoted.

Old search handed the reader ten links and let them choose. AI search returns one answer, assembled from a handful of sources, with citations attached. If your content cannot be extracted, it cannot be cited, and if it cannot be cited you are not in the answer at all. There is no page two to land on.

This is a structure problem, not a keyword problem. Open the page a reader is most likely to arrive on. Does the first sentence answer the question in the headline? If the answer only turns up in paragraph six, after the background and the context and the methodology, no model will find it.

Nonprofits get hit harder than most here. Nonprofit writing is narrative by convention: situation, background, intervention, then finally the finding. That is the right shape for a donor report and the wrong shape for an answer engine. The number that would earn you a citation is sitting at the bottom of a page nobody’s model reads that far into.

What this means for your organisation

Take your five most-visited pages and check whether each answers its own headline question in the first two sentences. Most will not. Rewriting those openings takes an afternoon.
